SALOON Wien

Network for women-identifying art professionals

SALOON Wien is a network for women-identifying art professionals, founded in 2017 and embedded within the international SALOON Network, active in 16 cities around the world.

Operating as a decentralized, self-organized and non-profit working network, SALOON prioritizes care, fairness and diversity while fostering international exchange, intercultural alliances, as well as collaborations among institutions, collectives and individuals. Through ongoing programs, events and formats situated at the intersection of art, society and politics, SALOON cultivates sustainable, long-term connections that move beyond short-term projects and create space for critical dialogue on power, representation and working conditions in the arts.

SALOON creates spaces for exchange and mutual support, offers platforms for collaboration, and opens up access to resources, knowledge, and international contexts. The diverse formats include international networking meetings, cross-city collaborations, mentoring and peer-support, residencies, public program, workshops and an exchange program. Monthly local meetings offer members opportunities to present their work, projects, and exhibitions, and to visit leading artists, curators, galleries, museums, and other significant figures in Vienna’s art community. These gatherings aim to foster dialogue and exchange between members and Viennese institutions, connecting art practitioners across all fields.

SALOON Network was founded by independent curator and author Tina Sauerländer (Director & Chief Curator peer to space) in Berlin in 2012. In 2017, curators Anne Roquigny and Valentina Peri expanded the network to the Parisian art scene, followed by the establishment of SALOON Vienna by Julia Hartmann, Aline Lara Rezende and Doris Richter in the same year. In 2024, Juliana Furthner and Pia Wamsler took over from Aline and Doris as Board Members of SALOON Vienna.

SALOON considers itself a non-profit working network aimed at promoting new projects, exhibitions, and diverse forms of collaboration both in Vienna and in other active SALOON cities. The initiative provides a platform for creative exchange and supports the development of innovative concepts and connections within the art scene.

“I believe gender discrimination is a huge problem in the arts. The SALOON network encourages women-identifying art professionals to be more visible in the art world in order to be more successful. For this reason, I am very happy to be involved with this wonderful group of female artists, writers, curators and entrepreneurs.”

Christa Joo Hyun D'Angelo, artist, SALOON Berlin

"SALOON enables effective networking in the art industry, exchange of experiences with like-minded people, mutual promotion.
